SAFE Work Manitoba's Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Strategy addresses the nearly 4,000 musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) in Manitoba workplaces each year.
MSIs are more commonly known as the strains and sprains that affect our backs, necks, arms, legs and other parts of the body. They are the most common type of injury a worker can experience on the job, and they are costly. In 2019 time-loss MSI claims cost almost $35.7 million.
About two-thirds of workplace MSIs are related to poor workplace design or unsafe body mechanics, which means that there are measures employers and workers can take to reduce the number and the severity of MSIs in their workplaces.
Our strategy includes working with safety partners on resources and training that are industry-specific and accessible online, supporting employers and workers in jobs with high MSI risk, reaching out to youth and young workers to deliver MSI prevention education, and building awareness among all Manitobans on how MSIs are caused and how they can be prevented.
