Do you remember your first job?
Think about when you were young… How old were you when you first noticed safety hazards at work? Were you comfortable talking about them?
The Level Up Campaign is a new way to view the workplace with fresh eyes – and through a virtual reality headset! The campaign features a brand new virtual reality game called Level Up. Level Up puts youth right in the middle of a jobsite riddled with hazards. The campaign and an online version of the game can be found at www.levelupmb.ca.
This campaign asks young Manitobans to “level up" their workplace safety skills to raise their awareness of workplace safety before they head to their first job interview or first day of work, and engage them in learning the steps they can take—such as asking questions—to stay safe on the job.
When I was young, I remember being concerned about my personal safety on a job site. This innovative campaign teaches young people what to look for, and lets them know that there are hazards on the job, but that they can be prepared to face those hazards and address the issues, instead of being afraid. Each of us plays a role in preparing young workers with knowledge and training to stay safe on the job. We all need to level up our safety skills to encourage young workers to ask questions and to ensure they understand how to perform their work safely. Whether you're an employer, a supervisor, a parent or a young worker, we've got resources that can help you level up your safety skills and help young workers level up theirs. You can find these resources at www.levelupmb.ca/Home/Resources.
You can hear more about my and other Manitoba leaders' experiences with unsafe work when we were young at http://www.levelupmb.ca/Home/LeaderVideos.
At the heart of this campaign is the belief that everyone in Manitoba wants young workers to feel safe, and be safe. That's what we want when they enter the work force. The campaign may remind some of us of our first jobs, risks we wouldn't take today or the close calls that could have changed our lives forever.
Visit the website, play the game and have fun while you "level up" your workplace safety skills. Our youth are the future, and we all have a job to do to prepare them for work.
